U.S. Centre Land Office - Registers' letterbook and correspondence, 1833-1858.

District Land Office Registers were responsible for keeping records relating to the sale of public lands. Periodically records and reports would be forwarded to the U.S. General Land Office in Washington, D.C. This letter book contains copies of letters sent by the Lebanon Register, Sampson Clayton, to the General Land Office 1849 July-Dec. The majority of the letters are fairly routine and concern discrepancies in records or changes to be made in records. Also included is a notation 1849 July 2 in which Clayton acknowledges receipt of the records of the previous Register, Hugh P. Caperton. The volume illustrates the daily activity of the Register and the relationship between district land offices and the U.S. General Land Office. The Lebanon Land Office was moved to Centre in 1856.
